Comments: I landed in the nam Jan 4,69.Went to hill 55 for a couple of weeks, then to hill 37.Remember sitting in the tank slot and watching the ammo dump at An Hoa get blown up durring the Tet offensive! As a new guy, right then and there,i had thoughts of wondering if i was going to make back to the states!Found out later that the tanks got hit pretty hard at An Hoa.Ended up at AnHoa,but they moved the tanks over by the grain elevator and for some reason,we never got too much incoming.Found out the VC would'nt shell the grain elevator{politics at work for you]i guess.Anyway, enjoyed your tour,Semper Fi,Cpl.C.V.Cummings/Dallas,Tx.

Comments: Thank you for a great web page. I work a lot with the tanks on Operation Allen Brook. I just about got hit with a road wheel When one of your tanks hit a mine. I remember the beating your tanks took on that operation, I also got a E ticket ride on one from hill 55. We were goin out on react to a Sqd that had got hit. They had jut oiled the roads goin off the hill to keep the dust down. when you put over 50 tons of tank going down hill on fresh oil you get a fast ride to the bottom. I was with A Co 1/7 on Allen Brook.

Thanks for keeping adding to the site. I recommend it to everyone who is remotely interested in the Nam story. Keep up the good work my brother! Also a general announcement: ANY USMC VIETNAM VET WHO HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH TANKS IS MOST WELCOMED TO JOIN THE "USMC VIETNAM TANKERS ASSOCIATION." Comments: Nice tribute to my old friend, Bob Butz. He was a super Marine and it was my privilege to have known him. We served together in 2d Tanks prior to his going to Nam. He had "Flames"; then was a PltCmdr in Co B, and was the S-4 "Alfa" at the time of his transfer. I was commissioned through the Warrant Officer Program, and when serving with Bob, ws the Ass't SupplyO, handling the warehouses and issue point in the tank park (Aug63 - Mar66). In Nam I was the SupplyO of lst Tanks (Jul68 - Jul69). At that time LtCol (then Capt) Paul Sams was CO, Co B. Also, I believe, lstLt Banning was his XO. Anyway, good Web Site. Semper Fi, Jack Miller

Comments: This site is for me, one of the most personally moving sites that I have ever seen. Having just returned from Washington, DC and the 1st Reunion of the USMC Vietnam Tankers Association over the July 4th 1999 weekend, this site has helped bring every experience as a Marine Corps Tanker to its fullest measure. I am so proud to have been able to have served my country as a Tanker. Again, thank you for your professional acknowledgement of the Marines that have served their country in the highest traditions of the Corps.

Comments: In the mysterious ways of the Corps, one day in 1966, I was a grunt PltSgt in K/3/5/ and the very next day I are the Motor Transport Ossifer for H&S Ist TKs. It's a too long story-started out to be an 1811 in '57, then an 1841-got to maintenance school at DelMar in '58--lots of side trips including 4 years under a hat at MCRD SD. Never got to actually fight a tank, so feel more like an auxillary, but have never been seen with a loose end connector. Last tank experince was as BnMaintO with 1ST TV Bn on Oki in'76-'77

Comments: Viewing your Website for 1st Tank Bn brings back some real hard felt memories.! 1st Tanks was my first assignment after ITR (and my first MOS..1811). It was Jan 1965 and we were "Bravo Co" 1st Tanks @ Las Pulgas CA. The Bn mounted out with 7th Marines in Sept 1965 for Vietnam (for what they told us was "operation Star Light")!! By then we had been "training" all over Camp Pendelton and I can still remember the smell of the diesel from the ole M48A1's (I was a driver) . I was selected to go to "Annapolis" so I had to "wave" goodbye to all my friends when they left for the LSD's . I've often thought about all my "Tanker buddies" and thanks to your site I know that none of them died in "Nam"!! The Naval Academy was not my thing(having had a taste of the "Real Corps") so after a few MOS changes I retired with 30 years service as a 2678 (Cryptologic/Special Intelligence)!! I still remember what a "SASH" brush is!! Semper Fi!! "PFC" Lipe (1811 at heart)!!!

I'll spread the word to other Marines. I served as the tank platoon commander of BLT 3/26 (a.k.a. 2d Platoon, later redesignated 3d Platoon,Company A, 5th Tank Battalion) from late February to late September 1969 serving with some wonderful Marines for whom I have enormous respect. From late February until some time in April my platoon operated in support of the 5th Marines. In that role, we were one of three platoons based at An Hoa and split for a period of time between that combat base and the position at Phu Lac (6) (Liberty Bridge). The other two platoons were the 2d and 4th Platoons of Bravo Company,1st Tanks, led by Lieutenants Ron Knight and Allen Cohen, who previously signed this guestbook.

I was there the day your driver was killed with the RPG he was layed on top of the track a piece of metal between the eyes as I remember. I also remember the corporal who used the 50cal to supress the fire that was upon us that day. Your tribute to the grunt was great, we also loved your work the flame tanks were hell for those in front of them. That Allenbrook was one hell of an operation without your tanks I may not be typing you this message. Thanks for your good work. Semper Fi...........Tom Carr

Comments: Hello Fellow Marine, enjoyed your website brought back a lot of memories. I was on Hill 37 and 55 in 69-70. We moved into that position about August or September 1969. I was with 3/1 H&S Company 81mm Mortar Plt. I'm not sure who moved from Hill 37 when we moved in but it must have been 3/7 because I know they had been there prior to us. The 1st tank Battalion was still there when we moved in and they stayed there with us several months. If I remember right they were it the troop pull outs that was taking place during the last part of 69 and in 1970. The word was out on Hill 37 that they were going home, and beleive me we were happy for them!!!! The 1st Tank Battalion was a great bunch of guys. I can't remember any of there names but they were very professional and excellent tankers. I am totally and permantly service connected disabled and try and dedicate myself to help other veterans. If you get a chance try and visit my site at url:http://www.geocities.com/Pentagon/Bunker/5709Oliver Jackson's USMC Homepage and Please sign the guestbook so I will know you were there! Thank you very much; Oliver Jackson 2479662 USMC RVN69-70.

I'd really like to hear from some of the guys I served with, most especially my good friends LCPL Floyd David Johnson, from Sarasota, Florida, LCPL Anthony Munoz from Los Angeles, and First Sergeant Verkennis, who was always a Marine - I think he was born with a rifle. Comments: i am a former Marine, 2326658, who served from 3Nov66-3Sep69 on active duty. my MOS was 2841 radio tech. i was on a Caribbean deployment with A/1/10 Arty as part of BLT 1/8, Dec '67 - March '68, which is why i missed the Big Tet. from about 3 Sept 68 through 25 Aug 69 i was a radio tech with H&S, 1st Tanks, 1st MarDiv, with attachment to 1st Ontos from Feb - April '69. the Ontos were disbanded & the crewmen sent out into the infantry units, and i was told the vehicles were given to the South Vietnamese.after 18 months of being in the Marine Corps Standby Reserve, i switched over to the 1st Bn, 185th Armor, California Army Guard, in Feb '71. i received a direct commission to 2d Lt., Armor, in Sept '71. after a lot of assignments in which my Marine Corps foundation helped me overcome various challenges, i am now a National Guard Lieutenant Colonel on active duty with I Corps, Ft. Lewis, WA. i will be retiring in Jan, '99. looking back over the years, those of us who served in RVN may have lost a battle, not through any lack of courage or determination on our part, but ultimately won the war. the soviet union and peoples' republics found they faced an opponent they could not intimidate, and if we were willing to pay such a price of blood and treasure for a sideshow as RVN was when compared to Western Europe, the Near East, Japan and Korea, then we were a power to be reckoned with. we bought time for the inevitable "internal contradictions" of their system to reveal themselves, with the result of the victory of all people who seek and love freedom over the tyranny of socialism. so now it is time for those of us who served there to use our talents, intelligence and resources to win the next war, which is to help bring the ideals of what is best of American Constitutional government and economics to allow people to pursue life, liberty and happiness.i salute those veterans who have gone back to help build schools, libraries and hospitals. the old guard communists who control the Vietnamese Politburo are now the ones who are attempting to swim against the tide of history, and will inevitably fail. the global marketplace is not yet there, but it is coming, and in the 22d Century Vietnam will be part of it, come what may.so in the end, we will be partners in trade, travel & culture. we won.

He created a Suicide Charlie graphic for my husband to use on his page, now if he will only get motivated and get his page done, the world can see more of Vic's great work. Thank you for your service to our country and for not giving up on those left behind. Semper Fi *Daisey*

Comments: I was with Bravo Co. 1st Tank Bn in Vietnam from Feb.67-Mar.68. My first tank Bravo 52 was blown up by a mine in Sept 67, two of the crew was medvac out one never returned. I was inside as the gunner at the time and it really was an bad. Our Company area was Hill 55, but we were on hill 10, 41, 65, and a great many more that I can not remember them all now. I know that Dodge City was one bad place. Most of the grunts that was with 7th Marines was really glad that we were around. That 90mm gun sure put out some fire power, and 30 & 50 cal. machine gun wasn't bad either. Tet of 68 was really bad as most people know, but it sure took its toll on Bravo Co 1st Tank. I got two Purple Heart and alot of memories. I guess that I have been long winded so Simper Fi. and thanks for the page.

Had one tank shot out from under me in an ambush in '67 and had one blown out from under me by a mine in '69. I don't consider anyone a tanker unless they have been on the M48 series. Comments: enjoyed your pictures. i was born in cholon, vietnam shortly after you were in the country. left the country in 1978, grew up in southern california from 1979 to 1989, and went to college in ohio. am now an american citizen. i traveled to vietnam in april of this year. stayed in saigon and went south to soc trang for a day. i loved the beautiful scenery, the wonderful food, and the vibrancy. hardest thing to deal with was the poverty. infrastructure needs improvement. roads were still primitive. vietnam can use some modernization, which is happening in saigon. but i'd hate to see the country lose its unique luster to modernization. i don't think that will happen anytime soon. but vietnam is a beautiful country. anyway, enjoyed you presentations. i have pictures of vietnam in 1997.
